The Idoma people have a rich and fascinating history in Benue State, Nigeria. They are the second-largest ethnic group in the state and are known for their unique culture, language, and traditional leadership structure. The Idoma people primarily inhabit the western areas of Benue State, including seven local government areas, and have notable populations in neighboring states like Nassarawa and Cross River.

Their history dates back to the ancient Kwararafa Kingdom, a confederacy of several peoples, and they have a strong tradition of storytelling and oral history. The Idoma people have a distinct language, with several dialects, and their economy is largely based on agriculture, with major crops like yam, cassava, and corn. They are also skilled hunters and have a strong cultural attachment to their ancestral spirits, known as Alekwu.

The traditional leadership of the Idoma people is vested in the Och’Idoma, a revered position held by the cultural and traditional leader of the Idoma people. The current Och’Idoma is HRH John Elaigwu Odogbo, who serves as a custodian of Idoma customs and traditions. The Idoma people have a strong sense of community and cultural identity, with a rich heritage of music, dance, and art.

One of the most interesting aspects of Idoma culture is their traditional dance, known as Ogirinya, which is a highly energetic and acrobatic performance. They also have a unique traditional attire, which features red and black stripes, and their food is a delicious blend of local ingredients, with popular dishes like Okoho soup.

The Idoma people have made significant contributions to Nigerian society, with notable figures like 2face Idibia, a famous musician, and Abraham Ajene Okpabi, a former traditional leader. Their history and culture are a testament to the diversity and richness of Nigerian heritage.
