I am ashamed of a comment by the boss of Nigeria’s federal police force on September 9, 2026.
I captured pictures 1 and 2 with the captions below from the video of an event that happened yesterday, September 9, 2026. Picture 1 is Nigeria’s Inspector General (IGP) Of Police, Rilwan Disu. He lawlessly and ignorantly, openly, publicly, shamelessly ENCOURAGED his Nigeria police officers to continue to violate the constitution of Nigeria against Nigerian citizens. He encouraged some officers to continue to brutalize citizens who exercise their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to hold police officers accountable by video recording their criminal acts while on duty.
Picture 2 below is the president of Nigeria Bar Association, Mrs. Okunsanya with immediate response at the same event condemning the IGP Disu’s comment. She promptly reminded the IGP that he was in effect violating Nigeria’s constitution.
FACT 1: Section 39 of Nigeria’s constitution (1999) clearly states that citizens have the right to document the activities of public servants on duty. This includes video and audio recording of police officers on duty.
FACT 2: Abundant records show that Nigeria police officers regularly, constantly, openly brutalize citizens who exercise this constitutional right. Such officers often openly confiscate or destroy people’s phones for recording their criminal activities in the streets of Nigeria and elsewhere. Indeed, pictures 3 and 4 below show a recent occasion where police officers tried to KIDNAP a young man who was recording their road blocking and extortion of Nigerians on a highway. They also tried to confiscate the boy’s phone. Yes, I call it kidnapping because the officers had no right to force the youngman into their squard car. They wanted to take him away for excecizing his constitutional right expose police extortion of citizens on the highway. Records have it that such past illegal arrests by police officers often ended in the murder of the victims by the police officer. Fortunately, in the incident shown in the pictures below, a crowed fought the criminal officers, recovered the young man’s phone, and resisted his attempted kidnapping.
Let’s get back to the event shown in picture 1 below. Nigeria’s current Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disgraced himself as a lawless police boss who supports the criminal acts of his police officers. He openly challenged Nigeria’s constitution on the rights of citizens to hold police officers accountable for their crimes. He openly said that Nigerians should not video record police officers on duty. The pertinent question is: What exactly is IGP Disu’s reason to reject video recording of police officers on duty if they have nothing to hide? Does IGP Disu send his officers to extort Nigerians as shown in pictures 1 and 2 below?? Do they return some of the proceeds of the extortion to him??? If he wants to run a lawful police force, isn’t he supposed to encourage Nigerians to help him to expose criminal elections with video evidence????
EFFECTS AND POSTULATIONS: By his declaration yesterday, it APPEARS that IGP Disu supports his police officers to commit unexppsed atrocities against Nigerian citizens. In effect, IGP Disu declared in public that he has been encouraging his officers to brutalze Nigerians who video record them when they are committing atrocious crimes. In effect, Disu declared that he challenges Nigeria’s constitution, and his office as the boss of Nigeria’s police has no respect for section 39 of the constitution. IGP Disu would be stupid if he does not realize that he openly ENCOURAGED all the police officers who watched his statement yesterday to continue brutalizing and killing Nigerians who video record them on duty.
Check this out, will you: In the USA, police officers are mandated to have cameras on themselves to ensure that all their activities are recorded for transparency and accountability. Obviously, Americans also have the right to video record police officers on duty without restriction. This right is enshrined in the FIRST AMMENDMENT of America’s constitution on December 15, 1791. Any officer who tries to restrict that right of the people is penalized as a law breaker. Any officer who so openly dares to encourage police criminality in the US or any other sane democracy automatically loses his/her job.
In contrast, the man in charge of all the police officers in Nigeria is fighting against a 1999 constitutional provision that is similar to the US First Ammendment Law. IGP Disu wants to kill the law that protects Nigerians against police criminality. I expect President Tinubu to publicly condemn IGP Disu’s reckless comment yesterday, or even remove him from office. I repeat, Disu endangers the lives of Nigerians in the hands of Nigerian police officers by encouraging them to brutalize citizens who try to expose their criminality with video recorded evidence.
